Night has fallen with a thick cloud of smoke hanging over Kimberley in a day of skirmishes between residents and the police.
It remains tense in Galeshewe amid the burning of the R.C Elliott Hall and a lapa at the Galeshewe Swimming Pool.
Attempts were also made to burn down the Recreation Hall. The Madeira Liquor Store in Lekhela Street was looted.
Scores of residents have been injured with some treated at the Kimberley hospital. There is still no police confirmation on the number of those arrested.
Earlier, shots were fired at crowds on the precinct of the Sol Plaatje Municipality’s Civic Centre with chaos breaking out as the executive mayor of the Sol Plaatje Municipality Mangaliso Matika attempted to respond to grievances of the protesters.
A number of nearby businesses to the Civic Centre were stoned as Kimberley got gripped by what could be its worst day of violence.
It remains unclear whether the impasse into calls for the municipal manager Goolam Akharwaray and chief financial officer Lydia Mahloko to step down will be met by a resolve. Tomorrow’s dawn remains a day of uncertainty
