Despite having been mired in the controversies of the social media circulation of fake lists and looming court action aimed at halting its all-important Provincial List Conference set for December 9 in Upington, the ANC in the Northern Cape has released the list of candidates nominated by its branches.
Speaking at a media briefing, ANC provincial secretary Deshi Ngxanga flagged the names of four leaders in the province’s top-five that are heading the list of province to province – chairperson Zamani Saul, Maruping Lekwene (deputy secretary), Fufe Makatong (treasurer) Bentley Vass (deputy chairperson) and out of that bracket is the name of Mac Jack, the MEC for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism.
He also pointed out that with Zamani Saul being number one on the list, it does not make him an automatic choice for Premier, explaining that three names will be submitted as per party procedure.
Ngxanga explained that the List Conference will further interrogate the list to ensure sectoral representation, skills set requirements and the absence of a criminal record for ANC representatives to be nominated as Members of the Provincial Legislature (MPLs) and Members of Parliament (MPs).
“In total we have 411 voting delegates. The others will be non-voting delegates. From the branch delegates; one will be female and the other male.”
When asked about the matter set for the Northern Cape High Court in which a certain group in the ANC is seeking to halt the conference and having brought the legitimacy of the Provincial Executive Council (PEC) into question, Ngxanga retorted with “it is malicious and done with ulterior motives,” when responding to the court case and “there is no way that the PEC will be disbanded,” was his other response in expressing confidence around the possible outcome.
Flanked by ANC staff members and a representative of the Independent Electoral Federation of South Africa (IEFSA), Ngxanga cited the build-up of the conference as having been “smooth” and “free of incidences” as the 121 branches sat for the branch general meetings.
He also indicated that sharp focus is to be given through the Thuma Mina campaign to the Sol Plaatje municipal area in dealing with service delivery shortcomings linked to a spate of violent community protests.
