With Kimberley’s hockey sensation Charne Maddocks 23rd birthday coming up in June, there’s just so much to be grateful for. She has cracked the South African Women’s Field Hockey team that is heading to the Tokyo Olympics in Japan set for 23 July to 8 August 2021.

From childhood, Charne has been a household name in the city’s hockey aficionado circles and same can be said about her brother Melrick who is fairing well as a coach despite still playing. Charne is a former learner at the Northern Cape High School.

Hailing from Keimoes outside Upington is the globetrotting Naveen Daries who cast herself into the gymnastics history books after getting the nod as South Africa’s second gymnastics representative for team SA at Tokyo. On the downside, her equally talented sister Zelme failed to crack an additional berth allocated in qualifying via last week’s Individual African Gymnastics Championships in Cairo. The two sisters are linked to the Gauteng based Johannesburg Gymnastics Centre.
