Following a 12 year battle in getting its plans off the ground in the establishment of the first of its kind in a South African black township, the Galeshewe Muslim Association is optimistic that the brick and mortar dawn in the construction of the 30-million-rand Galeshewe Islamic Centre is upon them.

Chairperson of the Galeshewe Muslim Association Aslam Tawana points out that there has been progress of late in interactions with the Sol Plaatje Local Municipality amid unresponsiveness over many years.

Tawana cited benefits for the community at large with in all residents set to be permitted in exploiting free services to be offered through the centre.

“Yes, the medical centre will be entirely for free screenings, meaning community members will undertake check-ups for free. We will also have a community hall also to be used by all community members and we will offer a skills empowerment programmes through the Community Skills Centre,” enthused Tawana.

Also envisaged as other key features of the centre are a Masjidu Bilal and a Kimberley Darul-Uloom where Imaams and Shaykhs are to be trained at.

The area in Galeshewe targeted for this massive development is in the vicinity of the RC Elliott hall which is a stone throw from the Galeshewe Plaza.
